CURIDAS 60th Anniversary: Platinum’s retractable fountain pen inspired by gemstones
In 1965, Platinum amazed the world by releasing the very first retractable fountain pen. Six decades later, the Japanese brand is celebrating that milestone with a very special limited edition of its CURIDAS model, now reimagined with inspiration drawn from natural gemstones.
After the return of the retractable fountain pen in 2020 under the name CURIDAS—quickly praised for its innovative design—this commemorative series arrives in three exclusive colors. Each shade channels the allure and energy of precious stones, giving the pen an elegant and distinctive character.
The shimmering, iridescent finish of each piece catches the light from different angles, revealing a dynamic play of colors. On the practical side, CURIDAS stays true to its focus on comfort: a nib length optimized for clear visibility on the page, paired with a compact clip that allows a flexible grip. Designed for active writers, it solves one of the most common issues with capped pens—the need to use two hands to open them.
A special sealing mechanism keeps the tip moist and ready to write at any time. And since it’s compatible with a converter, you can enjoy your favorite inks just like with any traditional fountain pen.
One of the featured colors is Lolite, also known as the “Viking compass stone.” This transparent silicate gemstone is admired for its blue-violet hues and remarkable pleochroism—the ability to display different colors (ranging from blue to violet or even yellow) depending on the viewing angle. Historically, Vikings used it as a natural polarizing filter to locate the sun and navigate on cloudy days.
